K9 Helps Nab Suspected Copper Thief
A K9 officer helped Halifax County sheriff's deputies track down and catch a suspected copper thief on Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedDeputies Jonathan Merritt, James Matthew and Joe Sealey responded to calls about a theft near U.S. Highway 158 and Bass Lane in Littleton, Lt. Bobby Martin, of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, said.
They found a man disassembling central heating and air-conditioning units. He fled when deputies arrived, leaving behind stripped-out copper wire.
Deputies asked for help from the Caledonia Correctional Institute's canine tracking team. K9 officer Sam, along with Bobby Drewitt and Wayne King, lead deputies to a home at 221 Phipps Drive.
After further investigation, Merritt arrested a resident of the house, Jerry Stovall, 18. Martin also credited deputies Chris High and Joe Puhak for assisting in the investigation.
Stovall was charged with larceny and injury to personal property. He was being held in the Halifax County jail under a $1,000 secure bond. His first court date was set for Jan. 22.
