ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Nash County K-9 unit tracked an armed robbery suspect Friday night to a friend's house where he was trying to hide, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies said that a man gave a note to a clerk at El Rincito store, 3300 Benevenue Road, saying that he had a gun and demanding money. He took an undisclosed amount of money and a cell phone from the clerk then ran away.

A K-9 named Rek and his handler, Cpl. D.W. Leham, tracked the suspect to a house a half-mile away along Benevenue Road, deputies said. The homeowner said his friend had just arrived and gave permission to search the house.

Inside, deputies said, they found Scott Nathaniel Carpenter and the stolen phone and cash. They said the cell phone battery was in Carpenter's pocket.

Carpenter, 33, of 767 Longbranch Drive in Nashville, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was placed in the Nash County jail under a $20,000 secured bond.

Deputies said they do not believe the homeowner knew anything about the robbery.
