Child playing with lighter causes Durham house fire

Eight people were displaced from a Durham home Sunday afternoon after the residence caught on fire.

DURHAM, N.C. — Eight people were displaced from a Durham home Sunday afternoon after it caught fire.

The cause of the blaze was a child playing with a lighter, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to 310 N. Briggs Ave. at 2:46 p.m. On arrival, smoke was visible from the front door and heavy smoke and flames were seen from the rear.

Heavy fire damage was reported in a room and hallway. Heavy smoke and heat damage was sustained throughout the residence.

No injuries were reported. The four adults and four children displaced are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
