Child playing with lighter causes Durham house fire

— Eight people were displaced from a Durham home Sunday afternoon after it caught fire.

The cause of the blaze was a child playing with a lighter, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to 310 N. Briggs Ave. at 2:46 p.m. On arrival, smoke was visible from the front door and heavy smoke and flames were seen from the rear.

Heavy fire damage was reported in a room and hallway. Heavy smoke and heat damage was sustained throughout the residence.

No injuries were reported. The four adults and four children displaced are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

    Thank God for that. These people should be investigated, however, and if gun owners, they should be taken away before something truly tragic happens.

    At least it wasn't a gun that was picked up to be played with. Probably one of those laying around in that little house with 8 people living in it.

    How in the world did a child obtain a cigarette lighter? Yes, I can here it now. "You can't keep your eyes on a child every minute". Well, actually, yes you can. And you can keep cigarette lighters out of their reach. Oh, yes you can.

    It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure lighters are locked up in a safe at all times. People who purchase lighters should be made to sign a document saying that they will make sure they lighter they are purchasing stays out of the hands of anyone under the age of 18 unless under the direct supervision of a legal guardian

    You would think in such close quarters the child would have been supervised pretty closesly.
