Just hours before Election Day, poll finds N.C. key races still close
Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 -- On the eve of the election, the Quinnipiac University Poll shows the 3 top races on the N.C. ballot are very close. Democrat Roy Cooper is up by 3 over incumbent GOP Gov. Pat McCrory; Democrat Hillary Clinton leads Republican Donald Trump in the presidential contest by 2 and Republican incumbent Sen. Richard Burr and Democrat Deborah Ross are tied at 47 percent.
Posted — UpdatedClinton leads Republican Donald Trump in the race for president 47 percent to 45 percent. Clinton captured 31 percent of the white vote while a mere 13 percent of the non-white vote backed Trump. Among early voters, Clinton led 52 percent to 40 percent.
In the race for governor, challenger Cooper leads incumbent Republican Gov. Pat McCrory 50 percent to 47 percent. Cooper captures 35 percent of the white vote while McCrory gets just 17 percent of the non-white voters. Early voters broke heavily for Cooper -- 56 percent to 40 percent.
In the neck-and-neck Senate race, Ross captures 33 percent of the white voters while Burr is backed by 17 percent of the non-white voters. Early voters split for Ross, 51 percent to 43 percent for Burr.
Drawing any firm conclusions from evaluating specifically how the unaffiliated among the early voters split is very speculative since the sample is so small (about 100) and the margin of error is plus or minus 7 percentage points. But, for the curious, here's how unaffiliated early voters responded to the poll:
- Unaffiliated early voters in the presidential race, Clinton 44%, Trump 44% (TOTAL POLL Clinton 47%, Trump 45%)
- Unaffiliated early voters for Senate, Burr 49%, Ross 46% (TOTAL POLL Ross and Burr tied at 47%)
- Unaffiliated early voters for governor, Cooper 49%, McCrory 45% (TOTAL POLL Cooper 50%, McCrory 47%)
