Julia Sims: Back in the groove

I had such high hopes for this school year. However, we are just a month in and things are already going south!

I pride myself on being organized. I keep the big family calendar and have all events and activities and babysitters color-coded. You know the system, right? Obviously, the "system" is only good if one actually remembers to look at it!

The other week, as I was driving home from work, I noticed cars lining both sides of the street in front of Will's school. I thought: "What in the world?!"

A text from a mom friend clued me in. It read: WE are at open house. Where are YOU?

Then, of course, there's the never-ending homework issue. During the last stretch of third grade, Will rarely grumbled about homework. He really seemed to be in a groove. Being the optimist, I thought that nice rhythm would carry over to fourth grade. How naive of me.

Nearly every night, the drama over doing homework wears me out! Oh, how I would love to live in a world where doing math and reading assignments aren't treated like I'm asking him to walk on hot coals. (Any advice appreciated!)

I figure things can only go uphill from here. At least I hope so ... we've got eight months to go until summer.

Julia is the mom of a grader schooler and a reporter for WRAL-TV. She appears here monthly.
