Today we are kicking off the 2012 "Joy it Forward" holiday theme with a Harris Teeter $25 gift card giveaway!

Joy it Forward is about paying it forward so we can all have a joyous holiday. We'll be giving away many more goodies here on the blog in the next month and my hope is that the joy you receive from winning (and seeing your fellow blog readers win) will encourage you to help others where you can - to pay it forward.

Even the little things make a difference. Hold the door open for someone, wish a stranger a happy holiday,  surprise the person in front of you in line by buying her coffee, donate a few extra canned goods to one of the many food drives happening this time of year.  There are so many ways to pay it forward now and all year long.

Maybe the winner of this giveaway will use part of the Harris Teeter gift card to purchase a few extra items to donate to the Harris Teeter Harvest Feast food drive taking place in stores now.

10th Annual Harris Teeter Harvest Feast

Through Friday, November 30, you can donate nonperishable food or money to your local food bank through Harris Teeter.  Simply donate food items at your local Harris Teeter store or purchase a $1, $5, or $20 Donation Card. All the items and monetary donations will be given to local food banks in your community.   Click HERE for more information.

Since the Harvest Feast started in 2003, shoppers have donated over one million dollars and hundreds of thousands of pounds of food to local food banks!

Gift card giveaway

One lucky winner will receive a $25 Harris Teeter gift card! To enter, leave a comment below with a "Joy it Forward" idea  - something you think you can do to pay it forward and put a smile on someone's face in the next week. I can't wait to see your ideas!

I'll randomly pick the winner (using random.org) on Tuesday, November 27 at 2:00 PM. Good luck and I hope you have a joyous Thanksgiving!

Thank you to Harris Teeter for generously donating the gift card!

Pack up some of your deals in a gift bag and share with a family you know has been struggling financially. Include a note to let them know they have been on your heart, and you are praying for them.

I would love to help a friend at work. She is 73 and still working full time ....until last week when her hours were cut and she took an hourly pay cut too. She's one of the most generous people I know so I can imagine it will be difficult for her to live on so little and not be able to fill her need to be generous.

Got this idea from a neighbor: have your kids pick 10 toys of theirs to give away... They are probably going to receive a ton more this holiday. Have them come with you to the place you donate/family you take them to. I'm so excited to do this with my children and teach them about "being a conduit for our blessings, not a bucket"!

Help a needy child or family in your neighborhood.

I have already "pay it forward" by donating my turkey from Harris Teeter I got last week to a needy family for this week's Thanksgiving, I plan to do it again with a ham for Christmas holiday. I have to only feed my husband and myself for the holiday and did not need the turkey for our small dinner so I purchased it (on sale and got a 16 pounder to feed plenty)last week and gave it up for another family to enjoy. It felt good and I know someone is going to eat as well on Thanksgiving as I am. Thanks for reminding us to share our blessings.

I try to "pay it forward" whenever an opportunity arises. With a $25 gift card I think I'd like randomly pay for someones groceries!

Donate food to local food banks.

My family feeds the homeless under the viaduct the Friday after Thanksgiving every year. It's always freezing but so much fun and such a great experience.

I would use the giftcard to purchase additional goodies for the backpack kiddos at my son's school.

At church last week, a member from Durham Meals on Wheels was there as part of our Minute for Mission. She spoke about the meals they deliver but she also spoke about how at Christmas, they ask their clients for one wish. Last year, some of those wishes were a set of silverware (1 fork, 1 spoon, and 1 knife) so she doesn't have to use plastic. Not a whole set, such one place setting. I decided at that very moment that this year instead of buying more stuff for those that don't really need it, I am helping Meals on Wheels fulfill those simple requests because we need to take care of our older folks.
