Johnston Residents Ordered to Conserve Water

Posted May 25, 2007

A mandatory water conservation order is temporarily in effect for all Johnston County residents.

“The combination of undetermined water loss during the night and high demand due to dry weather conditions make this necessary,” said Johnston County Manager Rick Hester.

The order applies to irrigation of lawns and gardens and other non-essential uses.

"County spokesman Pat LaCarter later said the mysterious water loss was traced to the volunteer fire department in Archer Lodge, near Clayton, which used as much as 400,000 gallons of water overnight to fill several ponds used for irrigation from fire hydrants.

He said members of the fire department failed to let anyone know in advance. The county uses about 4 million gallons of water a day."

this is from the N&O. There was no fire, they were just filling ponds.
