LILLINGTON, N.C. — A Johnston County man pleaded guilty Thursday to killing his stepfather last year.

Ricky David Faircloth, 22, of 852 McLamb Road in Dunn, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the April 3, 2011, shooting death of Ernest Marvin Tart. He was sentenced to 12 to 15 years in prison.

Investigators said Faircloth was trying to strangle his girlfriend when Tart, 44, intervened. Faircloth then grabbed a shotgun, and it went off as the two men struggled over it.
