SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Johnston County man was killed Wednesday while mowing in what Sheriff Steve Bizzell called a "freak accident."

Edwin Summers, 77, was cutting grass at 1569 Crantock Road in Smithfield at about 5 p.m. when his zero-turn mower went out of control and down an embankment, Bizzell said. The mower overturned, throwing Summers into a creek and landing on top of him.

Investigators said it's unclear if Summers drowned or died from having the mower fall on him.

His body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine a cause of death and whether any medical problems led to the accident.
