— A Johnston County man was killed Wednesday while mowing in what Sheriff Steve Bizzell called a "freak accident."

Edwin Summers, 77, was cutting grass at 1569 Crantock Road in Smithfield at about 5 p.m. when his zero-turn mower went out of control and down an embankment, Bizzell said. The mower overturned, throwing Summers into a creek and landing on top of him.

Investigators said it's unclear if Summers drowned or died from having the mower fall on him.

His body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine a cause of death and whether any medical problems led to the accident.

you're right a 77 yr old man SHOULD NOT be mowing his yard - his children should be doing it for him! I know I mowed my parents yard for years - may God be with their family during this difficult time

77 year old men should NOT be mowing grass. ecugirl should have been doing it.

I have to mow my road frontage with a string trimmer because it's too steep.

You make a lot of sense. I wish many would do exactly what you have been doing. A law mower is not just going to turn over, but on a hill it can happen. My condolences to his family and friends.

I see some of those mowers and they seem top-heavy with a tiny wheelbase. I have to mow my road frontage with a string trimmer because it's too steep.

Also, remember with all the rain recently, the ground may be softer and less stable under a mower than it was last week. Don't take a chance. You don't have to get it all done today.

My backyard backs up to his land. I only spoke with him a few times, but he was a nice man as was the rest of his family. Such a sad story. Praying for their peace and comfort while they go through this difficult time!

I have one of those mowers and they can be unstable and tip over. Very sad way to end a good life.
