SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Johnston County has added its name to the growing list of areas to prohibit lawn watering in the face of the drought.

Outdoor irrigation by residents on the county water system will be banned as of Nov. 1, County Manager Rick Hester said in a statement.

Johnston County had announced on Sunday that customers would be limited to using sprinklers one day a week. But Hester said officials tightened regulations further after Gov. Mike Easley on Monday requested all state residents to cut water consumption.

Also, several neighboring cities and counties enacted more stringent regulations this week, Hester said.

“I apologize for any confusion on this. However, we are team players and want to make sure we do our part.” he said in a statement.
