JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — All offices and schools of the Johnston County School System were closed Monday to allow employees to fulfill the requirement that they receive eight furlough hours as compensation for the 0.5 percent reduction in their salaries taken by the state.

In April, Gov. Bev Perdue ordered that all state employees take a half-percent pay cut for the 2008-09 fiscal year, which ends June 30.

The pay cuts, taken from checks in May and June, will save an estimated $65 million towards the expected $3 billion-plus shortfall for the current state budget.
