NASHVILLE, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says a Johnston County man riding a motorcycle on U.S. Highway 64 Business in Nash County died Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. near N.C. Highway 58 in Nashville as Gary Wayne Meek, 64, was riding a trike-style motorcycle among a group of bikers with the Johnston County American Legion.

Authorities said one of the wheels came off the cycle Meek was on and that it veered left and struck a guardrail.

Meek was thrown from the cycle and died from his injuries at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

His wife, Pamela Meek, 58, suffered minor injuries in the crash, the Highway Patrol said.

All of eastbound U.S. 64 was briefly closed near the wreck, causing congestion along the roadway.
