BENSON, N.C. — Johnston County authorities said that a fire destroyed a home late Sunday morning.

The residents were at church when the fire broke out at home at 4494 Godwin Lake Road, halfway between Benson and Newton Grove.

Firefighters from Meadow, Benson and Blackman's Crossroads responded, along with the Johnston County Fire Marshall and Sheriff's offices and the Red Cross.

The family was renting the home and lost all their belongings, authorities said.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but authorities said they don't suspect anything suspicious.

Johnston County has seen a series of 35 suspicious fires since October 2009. Since April, 20 fires have been set in barns and vacant houses in southern Johnston County. Smithfield has seen six suspicious fires since August, and Clayton has reported nine fires since October 2009, mostly in new houses or houses under construction.
