SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Johnston County Commissioner Wade M. Stewart died Monday, according to county commission Chairman Jeffrey Carver.

Stewart took his seat on the Board of Commissioners in 1998 and served as vice chairman from 2004 to 2008 and chairman from 2008 to 2010. Carver said in a statement Monday that Stewart "led with great foresight and was not afraid to make tough decisions."

Carver added that Stewart was a personal friend and confidant who cared deeply about the citizens of Johnston County as well as his wife and family.

"During his continuous service to the county, people respected his opinion, including myself," Carver said. "I will never forget him."

Stewart was a Bronze Star recipient in the Vietnam War.

Details about his death or upcoming funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
