SMITHFIELD, N.C. — After more than 42 years in business, Holt Lake Bar-B-Que & Seafood will close permanently this weekend, the owners announced via social media.

The restaurant, located on U.S. Highway 301 South in Smithfield, will have its final dine-in service on Saturday. Owner Terry Barefoot said that all catering booked through the end of the year will be honored.

The family-owned restaurant opened in 1979, but a fire burned it to the ground in 1981. It was rebuilt only to be devastated by a fire again in 2010. It reopened eight months later.

In a post on Facebook, Barefoot said it was "time to retire."

Barefoot told The Johnston County Report that the building is under contract to be sold, and he is unsure what the new owners have planned for the space.
