SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Johnston County commissioners on Monday approved an incentives package to help build traffic at the county airport.

The county will offer a 50 percent rebate on the property taxes paid for planes based at the Johnston County Airport that buy at least 12,000 gallons of fuel there a year, Airport Director Ray Blackmon said.

The rebates would start next January and would last for five years, Blackmon said.

The proposal is intended to bringer bigger planes and more business to the airport, he said.
