Jackie Hyland: This too will pass

Posted March 4, 2013

My mother gives great advice, especially parenting advice, maybe because she is a mother of six!

I remember years ago, after my first daughter was born, I was having a hard time fighting exhaustion from all those late nights and early mornings! There's no doubt about it, the early days of motherhood can be tough.

My mom told me not to worry. This too will pass, she said. You will be onto the next phase of parenting before you know it.

She was right!

I also remember being told over and over again, by everyone and anyone, enjoy every moment of your child, it all goes by so fast.

As a tired young mother, you long for the days when your child can walk on their own, talk on their own, dress themselves and go to school full time!

When I look back now, it wasn't always easy. I was a New York City reporter working night side. I hit the ground running everyday when I went into work, and I loved every single second! I know I would not have been able to do it all without the support of my husband and his mother.

Lately, I have been wondering where the years have gone?

My daughters are growing so quickly. I am so proud of them! Recently, my oldest started talking about driving. Yikes! I know I am not ready for that.

Now, I worry that I am running out of time. It won't be long before my girls are off to college and their own lives.

I know it's the cycle of life. It's supposed to be this way, but I am not ready!

My children are all grown, it feels like yesterday they were just babies. It's scary and exciting to explore each stage of life. Hindsight is 20/20 and sure there are thing I would do differently, but for the most part it's all good. I now look forward to being a grandparent someday, and the special relationship that will be.

My pre-teen daughter asked me last night, "how did you make it through the first year, weren't you exhausted?" Yes, I was awfully exhausted but that's just what mother's do.

I completely agree. I have a 10 yr old daughter and 13 yr old son- both great kids, and will look back at their baby pics and say "where has the time gone?" I try to enjoy every moment and spend lots of time with them. Parenthood definitely has its challenges, but I wouldn't trade it for the world!
