It's here! April the giraffe gives birth after months-long watch

Posted April 15

— April, the New York giraffe whose pregnancy has been watched closely for months, has finally given birth.

The Harpursville, New York animal park where April lives has a live stream of the event.

April gave birth to the new calf just before 10 a.m.

The new calf is 15-year-old April's fourth but the first for father, Oliver, according to the park. When it's born, the calf will weigh about 150 pounds and stand around 6 feet tall.

The park will hold a contest to name the calf.

More than 1.2 million people were tuned in to the park's stream on Saturday morning as the much-anticipated birth began. April meandered around her pen as park staff walked in and out.

With our fast paced, instant gratification lifestyles, it's just amazing to see something so beautiful and natural. Can't wait for the baby to stand up! The giraffe cam is so cool! Congratulations on the new addition!

I can't wait to see the baby giraffe. These have been my daughter's favorite animal for many years, so we've had many zoo visits to enjoy the beauty of these amazing creatures. Good luck to April. I'm wondering what the name choices are for the baby.
