Carletta Patrice Alston, 24, is charged in the June 4 shooting of Michael Donnell Smith, 48, outside his Knightdale home. She was being held in the Wake County Jail.
In requesting the search, investigators said they "found that Alston had a number of significant debts" and could have benefited financially from her step-father's death. They have asked to see records from her Wachovia bank accounts, documentation of her eligibility for food stamps and medical bills from Duke University Health System.
