Investigators: Hope Mills father abused 1-year-old

Posted September 12, 2013

— A 26-year-old Hope Mills man has been charged with physically abusing his 1-year-old child.

Nathaniel Pascarella, of 333 Masters Drive, is charged with felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Investigators said Pascarella was responsible for several contusions and bruises on his child's body.

Medical testing at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center revealed the child suffered a broken rib and acute subdural hematoma, which is a collection of blood outside the brain. Doctors at Duke University Hospital discovered multiple subdural hematomas of different ages, contusions to the head, a healing rib fracture, bruises around the eyes and extensive retinal hemorrhages.

Pascarella was in the Cumberland County jail Thursday under a $150,000 bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.

Sounds like this poor baby has been tortured for quite some time. I hope he's placed with someone who will love him enough to overcome such a rough beginning, and give him a chance at a normal happy childhood.

Anyone who treats a child this way deserves to die.

I agree with Wayneboyd. There is more to this than meets the eye.

Fourty Eight years ago Paul Harvey did a radio show on which he reinerated a narration of his entitled "if I were the devil." You can still read it on the net. Remember if you read it ihis was just 65 years ago. We've come a long way baby....down.

I think maaybe theres more to this story than what we're reading. I can't believe that a father would intentionally do this to his own child. But then again I'm old enough so that I don't understand a lot of whats going on in the world around me.
I cannot believe how Godless we've become.

Another illegal we have to pay to incarcerate. outhousecat.

Don't know for sure if he's illegal or not, but the name Nathaniel Pascarella would not generally set of a light bulb saying "illegal"

Mr. Pascarella was unemployed and cared for the baby while mom worked. The baby was taken by the mother to doctors and the hospital on several occasions due to unexplained bruises while in dads care. Even the experts missed the signs.

"I see no where in the article that says this happened over a period of time..." - Pepe Silvia

Perhaps the story was updated after you read it, but phrases such as "multiple subdural hematomas of different ages" and "a healing rib fracture" do imply this was not a one time event.

"Where was the baby's mother in all of this? Why did she sat back and allow this? She is just as guilty." - 678devilish

I see no where in the article that says this happened over a period of time. Maybe the baby was crying while mom was out and he snapped. Its happened. Not defending him, but I am defending her until something says otherwise. Nothing in this article says she had any part in the abuse or was a bystander to it.

Where was the baby's mother in all of this? Why did she sat back and allow this? She is just as guilty.
