Internet charmed by 4-year-old rocking out to song from hospital bed

Posted February 10

OAKLAND, Calif. — Four-year-old Leah Carroll has been in the hospital for over 300 days, but she hasn’t let that stop her from singing her heart out and becoming an internet sensation.

Leah was diagnosed at 6 months with severe congenital neutropenia, making it hard for her body to fight off infections. Her latest contracted illness has landed her in an Oakland hospital, 600 miles away from her family in Tracy, California. Her mom, Lindsay Chapman-Carroll, shares Leah’s journey on a Facebook page called Prayers and Love for Leah.

The Facebook page is full of pictures, videos and updates while Leah fights off complications in the hospital. She’s already had two bone marrow transplants to try to eradicate the disease, her mom says, but it hasn’t worked yet.

Leah’s latest video features her singing along to her favorite song, “Overcomer” by Christian music singer Mandisa. Chapman-Carroll shared the video to Mandisa’s Facebook page where it caught the attention of the singer herself and quickly went viral.

“It brought a smile to my face, tears to my eyes, and joy to my soul! Lifting up prayers for Leah right now!” Mandisa wrote to Chapman-Carroll. “Leah's light shines so brightly!”

The video has been viewed over 20 million times on Facebook since Sunday and thousands of people have reached out to offer their support.

“What a beautiful little soul! Me and my family will be praying for her,” wrote one Facebook user.

“I too am a bone marrow transplant survivor who has been the better have if a year in the hospital because of complications and pain. She is a true inspiration to us all and I'm soooo glad to have seen this post!” wrote another user.

Others have also shared videos of their kids reacting to Leah’s video.

“We are so thankful for all the love and support. We have been inundated with messages and want to thank you all for the out pouring of love for our family,” Chapman-Carroll wrote. “Leah stays in true form with her sassy self. We hope to be released this week.”
