Inmates die in Granville, Moore jails

Posted June 25, 2012

— Inmates died over the weekend in the Granville County and Moore County jails, authorities said Monday.

Christopher Cates, 21, was arrested at 1 a.m. Saturday on charges of public intoxication and resisting a public officer, Granville County authorities said. Detention officers found him dead in his cell shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The incident is under investigation.

Moore County detention officers found Steven Allen Harris, 58, of Wilson, unresponsive in his cell at about 11:45 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. He was taken to First Health Moore Regional Hospital, where he died about 3½ hours later.

Harris was in the jail on a charge of failure to appear in another case. His body was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The earlier story said the Granville County inmate was found hanging in his cell.

  • storchheim Jun 25, 2012

Where did it say he hanged himself - unless the story's been updated, it just says dead. Could have been alcohol poisoning too. Stop trying to no-so-subtly blame the police. I don't know this young boy, but the story says drunk and resisting arrest.
