WINDSOR, N.C. — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate after fight broke out Friday night at the Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor.

Correctional staff members broke of a fight around 10:30 p.m. that involved five inmates, according to a press release.

One inmate was killed, and another sustained minor injuries, as a result of the fight.

Officials said Joleski Floyd, 24, succumbed to his injuries around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the hospital. The other inmate was treated and is now back at Bertie Correctional Institute.

Joleski was serving a 10 to 13 year sentence for second degree murder. Officials said Joleski had been in prison since January 2010 after being convicted in connection to a July 2008 death of Derrick Barden in Warsaw.

Authorities said a second fight broke out Saturday morning, which led to another inmate being transported to the hospital. Officials said the inmate is in stable condition.

The facility is under a modified lockdown while the investigation is ongoing. No additional information has been released.
