JEFFERSON, GA — A man convicted of several crimes in metro Atlanta is back in custody after escaping from the Jackson County Correctional Institution in Jefferson.

Marcus Mahaffey escaped from outside grounds detail at the county fleet maintenance shop on Wednesday. He was seen getting into a silver Nissan sedan and was wearing a state-issued orange shirt and white pants.

He was found just hours later.

Mahaffey was serving time after being convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon in Newton County in 2012. He has several convictions in Newton County as well as Clayton and Rockdale counties.

He's the third inmate to walk away from a Georgia prison in recent weeks.

Jared William Pardue, 37, of Douglas County, walked away from a mobile work detail at the Central State Prison in Macon. He was later arrested.

Keyshawn Markese Cobb walked away from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center's Firearms Training Complex in Forsyth. He was arrested in Decatur on Friday.
