Laurinburg, N.C. — A corrections officer at Scotland Correctional Institution found an inmate unresponsive in his cell during a routine check Friday morning, authorities said.
Prison medical staff and local paramedics responded promptly, but efforts to revive Daniel Parnell, 31, were unsuccessful, authorities said.
Parnell was convicted in Robeson County in January 2007 of second-degree murder, larceny and breaking and entering and was serving a 12- to 15-year sentence.
The Scotland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the circumstances of Parnell’s death.
His body was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, authorities said.
Scotland Correctional is a high-security prison near Laurinburg housing about 950 male inmates.
