Durham, N.C. — An inmate at the Durham County jail was found dead in his cell on Tuesday, authorities said.
A member of the detention center staff found Matthew Lamont McCain, 29, unresponsive and immediately performed life-saving measures, authorities said. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate McCain, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
The Durham County Sheriff's Office and the Durham County Department of Public Health are conducting separate investigations into his death.
McCain had been in the jail since August on charges of assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon, battery of an unborn child, communicating threats and domestic criminal trespass, according to jail records.
The sheriff's office said he was involved in an altercation with another inmate on Jan. 14, but he declined medical treatment. He later visited the jail's medical staff for an unrelated condition, authorities said.
