— An inmate who escaped from the Gaston Correctional Center Saturday has been caught.

Officials captured 22-year-old Jacob Hilton at 4:45 p.m. Saturday walking along NC-275, about four miles from the correctional center.

Hilton was serving a three-and-a-half year sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon and numerous counts of breaking and entering and larceny.

Hilton has no pending charges and was scheduled for release in October.

Gaston Correctional Center is a minimum-security prison located in Dallas, N.C. It houses approximately 250 male inmates who are nearing release.

"He did that b/c he did not want to get out.. Sad, but he already beleives he cannot function on the outside."

I think you're probably right in that assessment, and I agree that it is sad. What's also sad is that no one is probably helping him get over that attitude about himself. He deserves jail time for his crimes, but there ought to be rehabilitation programs to prevent him from being a repeat offender.
