Inmate escapes from Butner federal prison camp

Authorities were searching Wednesday for an escaped inmate who walked away from a federal prison satellite camp in Butner, federal prison spokeswoman Denise Simmons said.

BUTNER, N.C. — Authorities were searching Wednesday for an escaped inmate who walked away from a federal prison satellite camp in Butner, federal prison spokeswoman Denise Simmons said.

Ernest Thomas, 60, was serving a 27-year sentence for cocaine distribution.

Thomas was discovered missing during an afternoon count of inmates on Monday. The entire complex, including the prison and satellite camp, was searched, but Thomas was not found, Simmons said.

No other information was released.
