Authorities were looking for help from the public Thursday night after a head count revealed that an inmate under minimum security at a Butner detention camp had escaped.

Bobby Eugene Crews was discovered missing at about 4 p.m. from the Butner Satellite Prison Camp. The facility houses about 300 inmates.

Crews, 57, is white, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has brown eyes, gray hair and a tattoo of a cross with “NC” on his left forearm and a tattoo of a shield with a sword and a ball and chain on his right upper arm. He also has a scar on his right upper arm.

Crews was serving time for drug and firearms possession charges and would have been due for release, with good behavior, in 2020. He is originally from Madison, NC.

Anyone with information on where Crews might be is asked to contact the nearest office of the FBI.

Thanks for the link, Sarah. Also, they did not notice he was missing until 4pm because that's when they do head count. Like I said below, there is like 2 guards per 300 guys so they wouldn't be noticed until one of the many headcounts that go down during a day. My father is in the very same facility, that's why I know. :)

4 p.m. Thursday was when they *noticed* he was missing.

This puts the public in danger. Obviously the guards there was not doing their jobs like they should have been doing. There is no reason for inmates to escapes if the guard do their job. Hopefully they will find him soon and get him back behind bars. If they find the guards was not doing their job, they should be fired immediately.

Why was he at a Minimum Security Camp to begin with? sonyahwilliams October 12, 2012 11:59 a.m. Report abuse

Non-Viloent maybe? Who is the victim in his crime? No one.
