ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Rocky Mount police are investigating two parents for possible child abuse after their 5-month-old son was hospitalized for head injuries Thursday.

Officers were called out to 757 Springfield Road in reference to a child being injured, police said. There, they found the injured son of Daniel Torres, 23, and Ashely Torres, 21.

The baby was first taken to Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, then transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was in critical condition Friday.

A physician at Nash General determined the infant sustained blunt-force trauma to the head, police said.

The department's Criminal Investigations Division is conducting the child-abuse investigation.
