— Rocky Mount police are investigating two parents for possible child abuse after their 5-month-old son was hospitalized for head injuries Thursday.

Officers were called out to 757 Springfield Road in reference to a child being injured, police said. There, they found the injured son of Daniel Torres, 23, and Ashely Torres, 21.

The baby was first taken to Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, then transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was in critical condition Friday.

A physician at Nash General determined the infant sustained blunt-force trauma to the head, police said.

The department's Criminal Investigations Division is conducting the child-abuse investigation.

Would dropping the baby or baby falling off bed or couch cause this? Couldn't the drs tell?

Tired of Escuses & The Eternal:
While I agree that many people fly off the handle with their "justice" talk. This story seems a little different. I mean how else would a 5 month old baby get blunt force trauma to the head? That has already been confirmed, not suspected.

Praying for this innocent baby. I beg and pray, DO NOT EVER give this child back to these parents. They don't deserve him.....and he certainly DOES NOT deserve the abuse. He IS entitled to feel loved. God Bless the baby!

Suspected means just that "suspected". The police have to do an investigation when the physician makes their report. Sure, it could have been an accident; but the parents' explanation for the injury must make sense.

There's no reason for something like this to ever happen....this precious baby did not ask to be brought into this world..if young parents cannot cope with their children PLEASE ask for help!!!!

The article does say "suspected abuse". Let's not convict until we have all the facts. If true, then hang them.

The baby was hospitalized for SUSPECTED child abuse. Wow WRAL so I guess anytime a child is hospitalized for SUSPECTED child abuse we'll be reading about it??? What if child abuse is ruled out? Now the parents or child giver has to deal with the crazies out there because their address has been posted.
Don't get me wrong. I hate child abuse as much as the next person and trust me there is more out there than what we read about. Sick, crazy stuff but unless it is proven I think we need to use some better judgement here. Unlike the parent who allowed their child to become injured. While we're at it lets read about ALL of the children who get injured becasue of parental or caregiver's bad judgement and or neglect. Better yet, we can have a whole section devoted to it on the web page.
While we're at why not write about all of the horrible domestic cases where the woman is brough to the hospital because some low life decided that he had to show her who the boss is...

Let me take a baseball bat to these so called "parents" heads. I am sure it won't hurt since they have rocks for brains!

Only animals hurt their young, and most animals love and defend their young with their lives.

No one should be permitted to take their newborn home from the hospital until they have attended some form of parenting class, so they will know what can be expected of a child at certain ages.

This child was probably crying, like most infants do from time to time, and the parents thought disciplining it would teach it to be quiet - which would never work because until a child is 3 or 4, they just don't have any idea of the full spectrum of things.

Praying for this wee one, and praying neither parent is ever left alone with him ever ever again.

    God bless.

Wow. How "empowering" it must feel to harm an innocent child. This just sickens me to the core. These monsters should be sterilized and the child removed from the home. My prayers go out for this little one and that justice may be swiftly served.
