Indictment Accuses Durham Mother of Child Abuse

Posted May 8, 2007

— A Durham County grand jury has indicted a Durham mother on charges she abused her four children.

Saretha Singletary faces four counts of felony child abuse along with exposing the children to fire. Firefighters had to pull a 3-year-old girl from a burning apartment last Aug. 27. Three other children got out safely.

Police charged that Singletary and the children's father, Travis Mason, left them alone in an apartment with no electricity and that the fire was caused by a burning candle.

Mason also charged with abuse and neglect

Most apartments wont allow you to live there w/out electricity. That is a requirement for most apartments. Or so I thought. I am glad the children are safe. Unfortunately it is after they had already been abused but hopefully they will be placed within a home that will help them to begin the healing process. The parents or parental units deserve the stiffest penalty the law will allow.

I just do NOT understand what some people are thinking. If you cannot care for one child, do NOT get pregnant again and have another and then another. It's a shame and quite obvious that lower income, under-educated women keep having children. Why? Because they think the system will provide funds for them and because they do not have the resources to learn proper birth control procedures. She and the boyfriend/children's father/sperm donor left four children alone with no electricity in August, the hottest month of the year. Those poor children had no A/C or fan, no lights, no refrigerator for cool beverages to combat the heat and no means to get help. I know pets that are treated better than these children were. Throw the book at the mother and the father. And make the first stop for BOTH of them before jail, an appointment at a hospital for sterilization. Too bad Durham doesn't have a mobile spay/neuter clinic for STUPID, IRRESPONSIBLE people.
