GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A planned, staged implosion Friday morning marked the end for the coal-fired, retired H.F. Lee Steam Plant in Goldsboro.

Duke Energy Progress is dismantling the plant as part of a broader move toward cleaner energy sources.

Friday's implosion saw twin smokestacks slowly fall to the ground. In the spring, a second demolition will remove the boilers from the site. Eventually, the utility expects to restore the site to ground level.
