If you have a habit of using your phone while crossing the street, you might want to rethink soon

— If you have a habit of using your phone while crossing the street, you might want to rethink soon.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed Bill 6 into law Thursday, banning pedestrians from using electronic devices while crossing any streets or highway on Oahu.

He was joined by Councilmen Brandon Elefante and Ron Menor.

Honolulu is the first major city to enact this law.

HPD has to actually see you breaking the law before police can cite you.

The fine will be around $15-$35 for the first violation. It can rise to a price between $75-$99 for a third offense within one year after the first violation.

The law goes into effect on Oct. 25, 2017.
