WRAL and friends take ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

RALEIGH, N.C. — The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the social media phenomenon that sees civilians and celebrities getting doused and asking friends to give to fund research and awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, has taken root among Triangle sports figures and the media.

Earlier this week, Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski got dumped on by his grandchildren and former Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Aaron Ward got a Zamboni full of icy slush dumped on him by team mascot Stormy.

Then on Thursday morning, our own Jeff Gravley took the challenge.

Who will be next?

Each challenge inspires more and results in more giving to the ALS Association.

Nationwide, the group has seen $7 million come in over the past three weeks, a figure almost quadruple the total from the same period a year ago.

WRAL and Fox 50 have pledged a donation to the ALS Association, but that didn't keep our people from lining up for their chance to take the challenge.

Lynda Loveland took the IceBucketChallenge on WRAL News on Fox 50.

She got wet in honor of our friend Chris Rosati, who asked us to channel all donations to the Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association.

WRAL's Debra Morgan also took time Friday to take the Ice Bucket Challenge at the ALS Association.

Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel showed he isn't afraid of a little cold – water that is.

Gerald Owens' daughter Sydney got to douse her dad.

WRAL General Manager Steve Hammel does the honors for Bruce Mildwurf.

620 The Buzz radio hosts Mark Thomas and Mike Maniscalco also took the challenge and were answered by Joe Ovies and Adam Gold, afternoon hosts on 99.9 FM The Fan.

The Durham Bulls have taken the plunge as well, and the team pledged at $1,000 donation to ALS.

Even politicians are getting into the act. Thom Tillis, speaker of the House at the North Carolina state legislature, took a break from negotiations Thursday to get dunked.

NC Congresswoman Renee Ellmers did hers at North Carolina State University.
