Car collides with rig, setting off fiery I-95 crash

Posted June 4, 2014

A viewer submitted this image of a fiery crash that shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Roanoke Rapids.

— The southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Roanoke Rapids were shut down early Wednesday after a fiery crash involving a tractor-trailer and another vehicle.

State Trooper R.P. Dennis said the crash happened about 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Exit 173.

Dennis said a vehicle driven by Mark Anthony Richardson, of Rocky Mount, drifted into the next lane and collided with the tractor-trailer, which was hauling lumber. The rig driver was identified as Martin Sherwood with Goldsboro-based Vance Transportation.

Neither man was injured, but the collision caused the tractor-trailer to flip and slide into the southbound lane. The rig ignited and burned.

Troopers said the road could stay closed until noon as cleanup crews work to remove the charred tractor-trailer and lumber that was scattered across the road.

Drivers are advised drivers to find alternate routes. The following detour has been set up:

N.C. Highway 46 to U.S. 301 to U.S. 158/US-301. Continue on US-158/US-301 to NC-903. Turn right onto N.C. 903 to re-access I-95 at Exit 168.

Dennis said Richardson was cited in the crash.

Quite right. But unfortunately, I-95 does not go to or through any major NC city so it does not profit the political class. most of 95 has not been upgraded other than band aid repairs and has many dangerous exits. (short ,or no, merge ramps with sharp curves)

It may need to be widened, but that isn't the problem. I was a trucker for 21+ years. The problems, as I see it, are drivers ignoring posted speed limits (just because everyone else speeds doesn't make it right), and not paying attention while driving. They're not just texting, they're reading books, magazines, etc; putting on makeup, and eating. You see a lot when you are in the driver's seat of a big rig.

I-95 is a death trap, it needs to be widen to three lanes each way.

The state will accept your donation...

The state has been accepting my donation for all of my working life. I've been paying taxes for over 30 years and watching as I-40 and I-85 repeatedly receive improvements, while I-95 continues to be neglected, despite the fact that it's THE major thoroughfare from NY to FLA.

Sounds like inattention/distraction to the task at hand. Sleepy driver, texting, radio or impaired?
