SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Over the next six months, drivers on a seven-mile stretch of Interstate 95 in Johnston County will see regular lane reductions. One lane in each direction will be closed most weeks from Sunday evening through noon on Friday. It is the first step in a project to repave the interstate and replace two bridges over it.

Work will begin with crews strengthening the inside shoulder next to the median before they shift traffic onto the shoulder while they work on the outer lanes.

The $53.1 million project will see the highway resurfaced between mile markers 100 and 107 in Johnston County and the demolition and replacement of bridges at Lizzie Mill Road and Bizzell Grove Church Road.
