I-440 West lanes to be closed this weekend

Posted August 20, 2010

— Interstate 440 West in Wake County will be reduced to one lane between the I-40 East/I-440 West split and Poole Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.

The closure is part of a $3.4 million project funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to resurface a 2.5-mile section of I-440 from I-40 to the U.S. 64/264 Bypass.

Motorists on I-440 West will be shifted into the far right lane. In addition, the ramp from I-40 West to I-440 West will be closed.

Motorists traveling on I-40 West needing to access I-440 West should use the following detour:

  • I-40 West to Jones Sausage Road (Exit 303) to Rock Quarry Road to New Hope Road to Poole Road to I-440 West.

Traffic heading to a concert Saturday evening at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek is expected to add to the delays associated with the project. To avoid congestion, motorists on I-40 West wanting to access I-440 should use the following detour between 5 p.m. and midnight:

  • I-40 West to I-440 East

They need to go back to inner and outer beltline. Much easier.

I think they mean 440 Outer between 40 and Poole Rd.

    See? Was that so hard?

    "... between the I-40 East/I-440 West split..."

does anyone know where the heck that even is?

Naw, see a MAP here would be just silly. Can't say Inner or Outer either. Anything that would accurately describe this route and closure is not allowed.

It's interesting that someone can have enough of an understanding of national and global economics to feel comfortable criticizing the allocation of recovery funds but can't follow straight forward detour directions in their own backyard.

This number of times I've driven that road it doesn't seem necessary. Work on some of the other roads around town, like Person St heading into downtown.

Woo Hoo, 2 1/2 miles from the AR&RA! Kind of pales in comparison to the public works projects of the 1930s, like the Hoover Dam, the TVA and CCC works, etc. What would have been nice is maybe completing I-540 without tolls! Kind of a joke isn't it?
