RALEIGH, N.C. — A four-vehicle crash and the discovery of buckled pavement on Interstate 440 led to the closure of the road Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said that the four-car wreck was reported just before 4:40 p.m. near Hillsborough Street, leading to a traffic back-up. One person involved in the crash was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As the wreck was being cleared, authorities on the scene discovered buckled pavement that required immediate repairs on I-440 between Hillsborough Street and Western Boulevard.

Steve Abbot with the North Carolina Department of Transportation said he believed heat caused buckling underneath the roadway. He said that the section of the road may need to be dug up and replaced.

The road reopened just after 8 p.m.
