NEWTON GROVE, N.C. — Interstate 40 at exit 348 in Sampson County re-opened at about 2 p.m. Tuesday after engineers from the state Department of Transportation inspected a bridge support hit by a tractor-trailer, troopers said.

Sydney Raydel Williams, of Silver Star Drive in Raleigh, was driving the truck when it slammed into the bridge near the exit for Suttontown Road, which is southeast of Newton Grove. Williams died instantly, troopers said.

Authorities set up a detour around the crash and the highway was closed while the wreck was cleared and the bridge inspected.
