DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted Tuesday to appoint the district’s Chief Operating Officer H. Hank Hurd as interim superintendent.

Hurd will takeover on Jan. 1, the same day Carl Harris, who resigned as superintendent last week, starts his new job with the U.S. Department of Education.

Prior to joining DPS, Hurd served as CFO and associate state superintendent for financial and business services for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for three years.

Hurd also served four years as the financial consultant for the N.C. Principal’s Executive Program, which is part of the University of North Carolina. There, he taught school finance to principals.

Before that, he was employed by Harnett County Schools as the assistant superintendent for administrative services and served as the CFO for 23 years.

Harris, who has served as Durham's superintendent since July 1, 2006, stepped down after being hired as deputy assistant secretary of education for policy and strategic initiatives.
