Human Remains Found in Abandoned Shed

Posted May 10, 2007

— Police are investigating the death of a person whose remains were found Thursday afternoon in an abandoned shed on South Plum Street.

Officers were called to 823 S. Plum St. at about 3:45 p.m. and found a badly decomposed body lying in the shed behind a vacant house, police said.

The body will be sent to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and possibly the identity of the person.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Durham Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 919-560-4440 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.

First and foremost, I hope that the medical examiner and police are able to give this person's family some kind of answer and some closure. Whatever the cause of death, it's a very sad situation for everyone involved. Secondly, it's a relief to finally see some people standing up for Durham. I've lived here for over a decade and have always been amazed how people want to call it a "cesspool". Have ya'll never lived in a city before?

and it could have been that he or she died of a natural cause but it is still a bad way to die, alone and in a shed. that is still horrible.

Thank you for that correction. If that is all you could find to comment on in reference to my post then you missed the point entirely. So let me rephrase as to be "correct" and not cause any confusion or add words to the above article. A badly decomposed body was found in an abandoned shed. Someone's beloved and that dsnt change if they were murdered or committed suicide. And all most of the comments can refer to is how bad durham is. Big woo. It is bad. But what about the actual person that died? Do they matter or do they matter less b/c it happened in Durham and it is not shocking to find someone dead in durham? It may not be breaking news to most but I like to show a lil sympathy and compassion just in case it wasnt a suicide and someone has been waiting on this person to call or come home or write and now there deepest fears will be realized when the police come to their door and tell them what they had already feared. That was my point. Again,

Geisha Girl...who said anything about the person being murdered? I didn't read anything in the article that the person was murdered. The person could have been homeless and died in his sleep. Or are you going under the assumption that because it was in a vacant area that it had to be murder...

This isn't about Durham, it's about a poor lost soul.

Praying results can be helpful in determining what happened, and praying this lost soul into the loving arms of God.

    God bless.

I have heard so many comments about how bad Durham is, but this happens in all cities, big and small. I have heard of more happening in Raleigh lately than in Durham. Why, how, did Durham get such a bad name? There are many nice areas in Durham, many cultural events, many nice restaurants, excellent malls, excellent healthcare..............yes, there is crime, but show me a city where there isn't any, and I'll show you some beach front property in Arizona.

please continue to hate on durham. it keeps the city free of people like the ones complaining here.

Who cares what city or where the body was found, If it was foul play I hope they catch the SOB who did this. The world we live in is getting worse and worse everyday. SAD

Why doesn't Raleigh get the comments when a body is found there? Case in point, this headline from 6/2006 on this website: Body Found In Woods Behind Raleigh Subdivision. Does it have to be in a shed to qualify? Durham isn't the only city where unidentified dead bodies are found. Durham has a reputation for being a "cesspool" because of the press.

Wow! Geisha girl... I don't live in Durham but those that do, their comments make not want to. I have to say that Robeson County is probably worse than Durham County as far as murders and being a cess pool. I do hope this person is identified and relatives contacted. As far as justice, if the authorities do "their job" and can gather enough evidence, then there will be justice. A judge can only go on what is presented to them.
