HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A 19-year-old Hope Mills man was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter, authorities said.

Tevin D. Evans, of 2539 Crumpler Drive, faces charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse. According to investigators with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Evans was watching Emoni Page on Oct. 16, when she suffered blunt force trauma to the chest.

Evans and his girlfriend, 19-year-old Leslie Clarker, took Emoni to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center shortly after midnight on Oct. 17, where she was pronounced dead.

Evans told investigators he thought Emoni had a seizure, but a medical examiner's report determined that she died of blunt force trauma.

A 3-month-old boy at home at the time was unharmed, police said. That child is Evans' and Paige's son, but Emoni Page was not Evans' biological child.

Evans was in the Cumberland County jail Friday without bond and will make his first court appearance on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
