Hope Mills man charged with killing girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter

Posted August 10, 2012

— A 19-year-old Hope Mills man was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter, authorities said.

Tevin D. Evans, of 2539 Crumpler Drive, faces charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse. According to investigators with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Evans was watching Emoni Page on Oct. 16, when she suffered blunt force trauma to the chest.

Evans and his girlfriend, 19-year-old Leslie Clarker, took Emoni to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center shortly after midnight on Oct. 17, where she was pronounced dead.

Evans told investigators he thought Emoni had a seizure, but a medical examiner's report determined that she died of blunt force trauma.

A 3-month-old boy at home at the time was unharmed, police said. That child is Evans' and Paige's son, but Emoni Page was not Evans' biological child.

Evans was in the Cumberland County jail Friday without bond and will make his first court appearance on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

NO. They wouldn't have charged him if that had happened. Give a little credit to the ME's office, the detectives, etc.

Is it possible the child fell and hurt her chest in the fall, perhaps from getting on a chair or jumping on a bed? Seems like this guy has already been convicted here.

Are you serious..This baby was killed in October. It is almost October again. Cumberland County needs to explain the delay. Why did it take so long? It is as thought h county is allowing murders of childre to just run free. How many children need to die. almost 3 years and they are just announcing the trial date for the murder of Shaniya Davis. Do your job Mr. West or allow someone to be in that job that will do it.

I could never be a cop because this guy would cease to exist if I made the arrest.

what is it with these guys killing the small children of their girlfriends? If you can't handle the pressure, don't ask her out in the first place and ladies, have some taste in your choice of guys!

Too young, too immature, too desperate to be "grown up". Children having children and not having the skills to raise them or understand the demands they put on parents. At what age do we need to begin teaching parenting skills? Now a 19 year old male is headed for prison for a crime he committed and he isn't even legal age to buy a beer?

    A 3-month-old boy at home

Social Servies should take the young boy and put him in a loving home. The mother should never have this child in her care ever. She could cause harm to him by the boy friends she bring into her life.

Praying that this killer gets life in prison without ever seeing parole. The mother should have been charged for allowing this to happen to her child and not doing anything about it. Young ladies stop being so desperate to have any old man in your life. There are some good men, but most are choosing the wrong kind to come into your life. Be aware and care when you have children. Don't allow a man into your home, until you know him very well. Make it safe for your children. My condolences to the family.
