HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Arson and hazardous materials investigators were called to a Hope Mills home Thursday morning after a man suffered chemical burns when reaching into his mailbox, said Debbie Tanna, spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

The man, whom Tanna did not identify, found his mailbox at 824 Alexwood Drive damaged Thursday morning.

His wife told investigators that she had heard an explosion over night, Tanna said. When the man started to clean up the mess, he burned his hand. Emergency medical technicians identified the burn as being from some sort of chemical. Authorities believe some type of chemical combustion took place inside the mailbox as a result of a prank.

The man did not require medical attention.

Members of the Cumberland County hazmat and arson investigation teams were looking into the matter.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500, or 910-484-TIPS.
