— Holly Springs Town Manager Carl Dean died Thursday from an apparent heart attack, town officials said.

Officials said Dean, 56, was participating in an annual golf event sponsored by the Economic Development Department when he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Dean served as town manager for 12 years and previously served as city manager in Dunn.

"I've known Carl since 1986," Assistant Town Manager Charles Simmons said in a statement Thursday. "I had the highest degree of respect for him from a professional standpoint. More important, he was a close friend."

A funeral for Dean will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunrise United Methodist Church in Holly Springs. Visitation will be 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

I had the pleasure of knowing Carl for most of his 12 years with the town. I've known him to be dedicated to the quality of life Holly Springs has to offer. Under his leadership, the town is staffed with quality people who are very capable to continue in his absence. He will be missed.

How very sad. This shows the importance of each of us knowing CPR and having an AED ready for use. Praying for everyone involved in this incident.
