RAEFORD, N.C. — A Hoke County man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment Thursday morning after firing an arrow at his head with a crossbow, authorities said.

The man's mother called for help after going to his camper on St. Pauls Road to wake him and finding the arrow lodged in his skull, authorities said. The stabilizing feathers apparently prevented the arrow from going completely through, they said.

The man told deputies that he suffers from mental illness and that the wound was self-inflicted, authorities said.

No information on his condition was released, although deputies said he was conscious and alert.
