FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on Interstate 95 in Cumberland County late Friday.

Witnesses told state troopers that a man was hit by a vehicle, described as a Ford Escort, near mile marker 41, south of Fayetteville, around 10:20 p.m.

About a half-mile after the accident, the driver pulled to the shoulder of the road and fled on foot, leaving the vehicle, Sgt. J.D. Aiken said.

Aiken said that evidence shows the pedestrian was standing in the road, causing the accident. However, the driver, who remains at large, faces felony hit-and-run charges.

After the initial accident, several vehicles struck the pedestrian, because drivers could not see the body in the roadway, Aiken said.

I-95 was shut down for a couple hours after the accident.

The Office of the State Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill identified the body as Arthur Ernest Petersen, 40

Anyone with information concerning the accident is asked to call the state Highway Patrol in Elizabethtown at 800-334-7411.
