Hit-and-run driver causes I-40 pile-up in Durham

Posted September 25, 2011

— A driver who ran from the scene caused a five-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 40 West in Durham County around midnight Saturday, police said.

Police said that a vehicle rear-ended another vehicle near Exit 274 to N.C. Highway 751, and the driver of the first vehicle jumped out and ran. Three other vehicles then smacked into the wrecked vehicles.

No one was seriously injured.

I-40 West was shut for about an hour while authorities investigated the wreck.

Police said early Sunday that the driver who fled remains at large.

three smacked into the other wrecks, were not paying attention or exceeding a safe speed. All three should be charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident..
